The Lloyds Somers automatic mechanism provides "hands free" operation of the tong which removes any potential for finger trapping and enables the tong to be operated remotely. The reliability and repeatability of the automatic mechanism is the main reason why Somers has been one of the U.K.'s leading suppliers of automatic gravity tongs for many years. The size of mechanism selected is determined by the capacity and self weight of the tong within which it is housed. The purely mechanical operation of the mechanism removes the need for power supply cables and therefore reduces the possibility of downtime through cable breakages or electrical supply problems from the crane.

Somers strength is focussed on design within the heavy engineering sector, all equipment is designed to BS2573 parts 1 & 2 to a duty rating of M8/A7.
